Conceived in 1984, L’Arc Majeur was finally installed this month along the E411 in Belgium, only an hours drive from Luxembourg City.

The decision was made in 2014 to erect the arc in the Wallonia region. It weighs roughly 200 tons, is 60 meters high and 75 meters wide and took over 6,500 hours to weld and assemble. The arc is made up of three sections measuring 20 meters in length and 2.25 meters on each side.

For a size comparison, the Sphinx in Giza is a mere twenty meters high while the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro is thirty-eight meters high. The Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue in Mongolia is only forty meters, making even it smaller than this statue. Two statues that are larger than this sculpture are The Motherland Calls in Volgograd which is eighty-five meters, and the Statue of Liberty in New York City which is ninety-three meters.

It was installed August 10-11 and will be inaugurated on October 23rd.
