TELEVIE EVENT - The traditional Télévie telethon event on RTL Tele has ended up raising close to 1.7 million euros. Since May 2022, individuals, associations, clubs, and companies have been organising events to raise funds for the fight against cancer. As every year, all proceeds will be donated to cancer research in Luxembourg.

ACCIDENTS - Emergency services reported two accidents on Sunday, which left seven people injured and in need of assistance. Shortly before 6pm, a collision involving three cars occurred on the RN14 between Medernach and Larochette. Six people were injured in the crash.

EISLEK HIKING - The Éislek region in northern Luxembourg has over 1,900 kilometres of countryside walking trails. With a vast selection of walking trails, ranging from short or medium walks to long distance hikes, the Éislek region has qualified for “quality hiking region” status. In order to receive the “Best in Europe” designation, a region must successfully meet 43 criteria. Authorities worked on the project to obtain certified status from 2016 to 2022.

SUDAN EVACUATIONS - As fighting continues in Sudan, an increasing number of countries are evacuating their diplomats from the capital Khartoum. According to French officials, more than 100 people have left on the first French flight out of the war-hit country after a “complicated” rescue operation. The first rescue flight to Djibouti carried citizens from Britain, France, Germany, and Switzerland as well as African nations such as Ethiopia and Morocco. A second plane is due to take off today. EU foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg today to discuss the situation in Sudan as well as the Ukrainian war. The situation in Khartoum is getting worse and worse – there is almost no electricity, as well as no running water or enough to eat. According to the World Health Organisation, there are only 35 hospitals operational in the whole country.

RENEWABLES SUMMIT - The future of European energy is the subject of a major summit in Ostende today. Nine European countries are meeting on the Belgian coast, including Luxembourg and the UK. Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and the Minister of Energy Claude Turmes will discuss how to better and more effectively work together to use renewable wind energy production in the sea. The goal is for the North Sea to become the main energy supplier for Europe by 2050 with new wind farms. France alone wants to set up 50 new wind farms in its seas.

AIR POLLUTION - The EU environmental agency says that air pollution still causes more than 1,200 premature deaths a year in children across Europe and increases the risk of chronic disease later in life. The report, which analysed over 30 countries says that 97% of the urban population is exposed to air that did not reach WHO recommendations and that children are particularly affected.

MILITARY SPENDING - Global security researchers have found that Europe’s military spending grew at a record pace in 2022, reaching a level unseen since the Cold War following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The organisation based in Stockholm found that global military expenditures reached over 2 trillion dollars, or 2.2 percent of the world’s gross domestic product.

CYCLING - Remco Evenepoel won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege cycling classic on Sunday, retaining his title after his rival Tadej Pogacar broke his wrist in an early fall. World champion Evenepoel broke away with 30km to go when Tom Pidcock refused an offer to work together.Evenepoel shrugged, powered away and finished the 258km race in 6hrs 15min 49sec with Pidcock second 1min 06sec behind, outsprinting Santiago Sanchez in third. Luxembourgish cyclist Kevin Geniets came in 52nd place.

FOOTBALL - In the German Bundesliga games on Sunday, Union Berlin won 1-0 against Monchengladbach, Leverkusen beat Leipzig 2-0 and Freiburg beat Schalke 4-0.

In the English FA Cup, there is a purely Manchester final. Man United beat Brighton on penalties yesterday and Manchester City has already claimed 3-0 against Sheffield.

Overcast skies with the odd bright spot in the afternoon set the tone for today, with scattered rain showers predicted throughout.Morning temperatures will start off at 7-9°C, rising no higher than 11°C in the afternoon.
