MISSING PERSON – Police are reporting that a 14-year-old girl is missing. Charlène Loux is 1.60m tall and has long brown hair. She was last spotted near the private secondary school Fieldgen in Luxembourg City around 4pm on Monday. At the time, the girl was wearing a black jacket and black and white sneakers. Anyone with any information, should contact Differdange police or 113.

POLITMONITOR EU ELECTIONS – In light of the upcoming European elections, to be held in Luxembourg on 9 June, a new ‘politmonitor’ survey has been commissioned by RTL and Wort to feel the pulse of eligible voters in the Grand Duchy.In the 2-part survey, the LSAP’s Mars Di Bartolomeo leads the candidate ranking while the CSV emerges as the most trusted party to address European issues. It also revealed that that inflation, climate change, and security are the top concerns for voters in Luxembourg, with over 70% expressing interest in the upcoming vote.

NUCLEAR ENERGY – MPs discussed the contentious topic of nuclear energy in the Chamber of Deputies yesterday. Prime Minister Luc Frieden reiterated the government’s firm stance against the construction of a nuclear power plant in Luxembourg and its ongoing advocacy for renewable energy initiatives. At the same time, he stressed that, as a smaller energy producer reliant on imports for a significant portion of its needs, Luxembourg should not oppose EU investments in nuclear energy.

MEMORIAL CEREMONY – Luxembourg is marking 79 years since Nazi Germany capitulated and the Second World War came to an end, an occasion that will be commemorated at the Monument of Remembrance in Luxembourg City. Prime Minister Luc Frieden will attend the ceremony at the ‘Golden Lady’ this morning.

TALI EUROVISION – Tali is through to the Eurovision Song Contest final on Saturday. With only 10 of the 15 semi-finalists making it through to the final, Tali was the last candidate to qualify in what was an absolutely nerve-wracking moment for Luxembourg. In Tali’s first reaction after the show, she said she can hardly believe Luxembourg is in the final and that she had been a little more nervous for the semi-final: “I was like, this is the night.”

World

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR – Israel says it will intensify its attack on Rafah in southern Gaza until Hamas is eliminated or the group releases the first of the remaining hostages it holds. Israel has sent a delegation to Egypt to take part in ceasefire talks, which Hamas says will be the last chance for a release of hostages. Tanks are now blocking the Rafah border crossing with Egypt in an operation the United Nations says denies it access to the key passage for humanitarian aid. There are hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees in Rafah. Meanwhile, the United States has paused a military aid shipment to Israel, marking a shift in the Biden administration’s approach to the conflict.

XI SERBIA – Xi Jinping arrived in Belgrade yesterday evening, on the next step in his European tour. Xi will hold talks with President Aleksandar Vucic in Serbia, where China has invested heavily to expand its economic footprint. In France, Macron pressed a message to Beijing not to support Russia’s war against Ukraine and to accept fairer trade.But the other two countries chosen by Xi for his first trip to Europe since 2019 – Hungary is his final stop after Serbia – are seen as among the most sympathetic to Moscow in Europe.

HEAT RECORD – We have another new global climate record. According to the European climate agency Copernicus, last month was the warmest April recorded so far. And the first with an average above 15 degrees. It is the twelfth month in a row, with new record values.

Sport

FOOTBALL – Mats Hummels headed in the only goal as Borussia Dortmund stunned Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League semi-final second leg last night, winning 1-0 on the night and advancing 2-0 on aggregate to next month’s final at Wembley. Tonight’s second semi-final game sees Real Madrid playing against Bayern.

OLYMPICS – The Olympic flame is set to arrive in the French port of Marseille today, in front of a crowd of up to 150,000 people and accompanied by around 1,000 boats. The transfer of the flame onshore from a 19th-century tall ship will mark the start of a 12,000-kilometre torch relay across mainland France and the country’s overseas territories.

CYCLING – Today sees the start of the Flèche du Sud. The 75th edition runs over 5 stages until Sunday. Today’s stage is about 86 kilometers. 120 riders from 23 nations are participating, including 19 Luxembourgers. And the Italian cyclist Jonathan Milan has won the fourth stage in the Giro d’Italia. Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar retains the overall lead.

Weather

Prepare for a partly cloudy day (on-and-off clouds with a good deal of sunshine!) and the possibility of light showers throughout the afternoon. Temperatures will range from around 11°C in the morning before ramping to 17–20°C across the afternoon.

According to the latest predictions from Météolux, the grey skies and chilly conditions are set to dissipate, making way for sunny skies and warmer temperatures for tomorrow’s holiday and weekend.
