
ENERGY SUPPLIES - Good news for Luxembourg’s energy supplies. According to Carlo Bartocci from CREOS, 90% of gas storages in Europe are full. The electricity supply is also secure, and so the danger of blackouts over winter has passed. Luxembourg had set itself the goal of saving 15 percent of gas in 2022 compared to the previous year, but in fact around 30 percent was saved.
LUXAIR PLANES - Luxair plans to add two new planes to its fleet. RTL sources say negotiations are currently ongoing with American manufacturer Boeing. The aircraft in question are thought to be two Boeing 737-8 models although legal details are yet to be confirmed. Luxair said the purchase of the new planes represents an expansion of their current capacity, rather than a planned overhaul of the fleet. The new aircraft can transport up to 200 passengers and can cover considerably greater distances than their predecessors.
MANHUNT - The police have launched a search for a burglar suspected of robbing a jewellery store on Avenue Charlotte, Differdange. The suspect targeted a jewellery shop at around 4.50pm on Tuesday, leaving two employees with minor injuries.A manhunt was launched after he made his escape on foot. According to a description released by police on Tuesday evening, the perpetrator was around 1.80 metres tall, white, of average build, with close-shaved dark hair and heavy stubble. He was said to be around 60 years old and wore glasses and grey clothing. Witnesses said he spoke German and French, and was missing his lower teeth.Anyone with information on the suspect should contact the police as a matter of urgency.
EU CORRUPTION - A key suspect of an EU corruption scandal, former MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri has a cut a deal to divulge information about countries involved and bribes made. In return, he will get a lighter sentence including imprisonment, a fine and confiscation of one million euros in assets. The development is a dramatic turn in the corruption scandal in which prosecutors suspect Qatar and Morocco funnelled bribes through Panzeri and other figures to influence decisions in the European Parliament. In Strasbourg, the successor to Eva Kaili, the MEP and vice-president of the European Parliament who was involved in this corruption case will be voted in at noon today. In the race is the Luxembourg politician Marc Angel.
UKRAINE WEF - The rescue work in Dnipro is over. There is no hope of finding any more survivors. At the weekend, a Russian missile attack hit a high-rise building in the Ukrainian city, killing 45 people. 20 people are still missing. Arms deliveries to Ukraine will be one of the main topics at the World Economic Forum in Davos today. Ukrainian President Zelensky is expected to address the meeting as is NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg and German Chancellor Scholz. Meanwhile, the Netherlands has now announced aid for Ukraine of 2.5 billion euros.These also include Patriot surface-to-air missiles.
OLDEST PERSON - The oldest person in the world has died. French nun Sister André died at the age of 118 in the French city of Toulon. Born as Lucile Rondon in 1904, Sister André dedicated most of her life to religious service.
MADONNA TOUR - Madonna has announced a world tour to coincide with the 40th anniversary of her first international hit “holiday”. The celebration tour, which starts in Canada on July 15th will be a greatest hits show. It will continue in Europe in the autumn, with stops including London, Barcelona and Paris and a final show in Amsterdam on December 1.
TENNIS – Novak Djokovic enjoyed a rousing reception on a winning return to the Australian Open and Andy Murray rolled back the years to stun Matteo Berrettini in a classic. Djokovic sent Spain’s 75th-ranked Roberto Carballes Baena packing at Rod Laver Arena, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0, to surge into round two. Prior to that, Andy Murray saved match point to defeat Italy’s 13th seed Berrettini 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (7/9), 7-6 (10/6) in 4hrs 49mins at Rod Laver Arena, where the roof was closed because of the extreme heat.
FOOTBALL - Tonight is the Italian Super Cup. From 8 o’clock, AC Milan and Inter Milan face each other. The match will be played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
MORE FOOTBALL - A Saudi real estate mogul has won a ticket to see Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi face off in a friendly after bidding $2.6 million dollars at auction. The match on Thursday in Riyadh is set to pit Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain against a select side made up of players from Ronaldo’s new club Al Nassr and their Saudi rivals Al Hilal.
Temperatures will stay around the freezing mark for most of today, with the potential for sunny spells in the afternoon. Expect a cold and cloudy start, with light winds and bitter chills. However, the afternoon will be slightly more pleasant, and what’s more, there are no downpours forecast today. Morning temperatures of -3 to -1°C will rise slightly to 1-3°C in the afternoon.
