The Romanian national Iordan N. “was arrested yesterday evening (Friday) in Milan”, declared Hayange Mayor Fabien Engelmann. “We are relieved that he has been caught. His victim is fighting for her life, in intensive care, and her prognosis remains uncertain. However, the man who tried to help the victim is recovering after surgery, and he will be honoured by the town in due course”, added Mayor Engelmann.
The incident took place on Thursday, around 5pm, near the Match supermarket in the center of Hayange, 30 km north of Metz. Initial inquiries into the attempted homicide revealed that the suspect knew his victim, and they had been in an extramarital relationship while the former was in prison.
The prosecutor’s office emphasised on Friday that the 39-year-old had been sentenced eight times in the past 10 years for serious thefts and traffic offences. He served an 18-month prison sentence from 2016 to 2017.
At the end of September, when he was released, the victim wanted to end her relationship with Iordan N. and return to her married life, stated the prosecutor’s office.
On 5 November, in a separate case, the Thionville Criminal Court sentenced Alexandra L. and her husband for aggravated violence committed against Iordan N. in an immediate court appearance. According to the prosecutor’s information, “Mrs. Alexandra L. had lured him to her home, stating that her husband was not there”, and Iordan N. received “nine stab wounds, including three in his back, inflicted by her spouse”.
Alexandra L. was consequently sentenced to prison and issued a restraining order. Her husband was sentenced to two years in prison and was immediately incarcerated.
