
CHURCH ABUSE - The archdiocese of Luxembourg forwarded 4 files to the prosecutor’s office involving abuse by members of the Catholic Church. One case is said to have involved sexual violence in the late 1930s by a clergyman, reported by a victim who was a minor at the time of the assaults. The other cases involved physical violence.
PEDESTRIAN HIT - The latest emergency service report shows that yet another pedestrian was hit by a car and injured yesterday evening in Findel. Emergency services from Luxembourg City and Sandweiler were called to the scene to provide assistance.
FRIEDEN UNIONS - Prime Minister Luc Frieden will meet union representatives this afternoon. It is expected the talks in the State Ministry will centre around economic and social current affairs. Among other things, the housing problem. On that issue, unions criticised the government for not being invited to housing talks two weeks ago.
OBESITY UP - Recent studies in Luxembourg reveal that an increasing number of residents, including children, are grappling with overweight and obesity issues. Data from the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), conducted in 2019, indicates a notable uptick in the proportion of obese adults from 15.6% in 2014 to 16.5% in 2019.
US ELECTIONS - Millions of voters are heading to the polls in 15 US states and 1 overseas territory to choose their preferred candidate for November’s Presidential election. ‘Super Tuesday’ as it’s called is expected to make a re-match between President Biden and Donald Trump more likely. The US Supreme Court has said Trump can appear on presidential ballots this year, putting an end to efforts to ban him.
METHANE SATELLITE - A new satellite has blasted into orbit to monitor the levels of methane gas in the atmosphere to try to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gas. Data from “MethaneSAT” will allow oil and gas companies to get methane leaks fixed more quickly, helping to combat climate change.
MACRON CZECHIA - French President Emmanuel Macron is visiting Prague today, to clarify his country’s standpoint on a Czech plan to buy weapons outside Europe for war-ravaged Ukraine. The visit comes amidst controversy over Macron’s suggestion of potential Western troop deployment to Ukraine. Macron is due to meet Czech President Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Petr Fiala, and address a nuclear forum.
CHINA GROWTH - Chinese Premier Li Qiang has announced an ambitious growth target of around 5% for this year at the opening of the annual National People’s Congress earlier today. It comes as China struggles to reinvigorate its once-booming economy. A series of other measures to help tackle the country’s recovery from the pandemic were also announced, including initiatives in the property sector as well as tackling youth unemployment.
APPLE FINE - The European Union has imposed a 1.8 billion-euro fine on Apple, marking the company’s first antitrust penalty from Brussels, following allegations of limiting competition by restricting music streaming services from offering alternative subscription options. The iPhone maker immediately vowed to appeal the fine, the culmination of a case triggered by a complaint by Swedish music streaming giant Spotify.
FOOTBALL – It’s kick off today in the second leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League. Paris St Germain travel to Spain to play Real Sociedad with a 2-0 advantage. And Lazio Rome is playing against Bayern Munich.
CYCLING - In the 2nd stage of the Paris-Nice race yesterday, the Dutch cyclist Arvid De Klein was able to prevail in the sprint, ahead of Laurence Pithie from New Zealand, who is now the new general leader. Luxembourg’s Bob Jungels is in 23rd place. On the third day today there is a team time trial in Auxerre for 27 km.
SAILING - French yachtswoman Clarisse Cremer and her husband have been cleared of allegations they cheated in the last Vendee Globe sailing race, following an investigation by an international jury.
