EU ENERGY- EU energy ministers are meeting in Kirchberg today. The main issue is the high energy prices. Among other issues, a price cap on energy prices will be discussed. And how EU member states can buy gas together for a better price. At the moment, however, the gas price has started to fall. On the energy market in the Netherlands, the megawatt-hour of gas was once again below 100 euros, for the first time since June. In August, it was still over 340 euros.The reasons given are the warm temperatures and well-filled European gas storage units.

COVID STUDY - Researchers in Luxembourg have discovered how to use vocal biomarkers to monitor COVID-19. The Predi-COVID Cohort study, led by Dr Guy Fagherazzi of the Luxembourg Institute of Health, showed for the first time that vocal recordings of COVID-19 affected people could be used to monitor related symptoms of the disease. This recent study is the first to use spoken voice recordings, as opposed to coughing or breathing, from various devices, and in a real world environment to identify COVID-19-related symptoms.

FOOD AWARDS- The gastronomic guide Gault & Millau 2023 has rewarded Luxembourg’s most talented chefs. Four years after his first award, Roberto Fani was once again elected “Chef of the Year”. Restaurant Eden Rose in Kayl has also found itself in the spotlight for a second time as “Discovery of the Year 2022". And two Ukrainian pastry chefs have melted the hearts of food critics. Iryna Kulakova and Kateryna Podliesna share the title of “Pastry Chef of the year.

PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE- There will be a partial solar eclipse today. The phenomenon of the moon partially covering the sun can be seen in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, when the sky is clear. It will be visible in Luxembourg from 11:11 local time, for a duration of 1 hour and 53 minutes. The point of maximum eclipse, when the moon is closest to the sun and therefore partially obscures it, will be at 12:07. However people are advised not look directly at the sun.

UK PRIME MINISTER - Rishi Sunak will be appointed by King Charles as Britain’s new Prime Minister later this morning, after Liz Truss makes her formal resignation to the King. Sunak was declared leader of the Conservative party when his last rival pulled out, just before the deadline. Sunak has warned that Britain faces a profound economic challenge.

RUSSIA DIRTY BOMB - Russia is to take its accusation that Ukraine is planning a dirty bomb attack to the UN Security council today. In a letter, the Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the use of any such device would be seen as an act of nuclear terrorism. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has responded by accusing Russia of planning such an attack itself to blame on Ukraine.

FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - it’s the 5th match day in the Champions League: Among tonight’s matches, Salzburg will take on Chelsea, Sevilla plays Copenhagen, Madrid play Leipzig, PSG play Haifa, Benfica play Juventus and Dortmund will take on Manchester city.

WORLD CUP ZIDANE - French World Cup-winning hero Zinedine Zidane said it was “time to forget the controversies and focus on the football” at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, despite calls to boycott the tournament over the Gulf state’s rights record and treatment of migrant workers. Former Real Madrid coach Zidane said the focus should now be on the sport for all those fans who just want to watch the football.

The morning will start off cloudy and a bit of rain is expected. It will clear out by early afternoon and the rest of the day should be quite pleasant. Morning temperatures start off at 9-12°C, rising to 13-16°C in the afternoon.
