In Nonnweiler, not far from Trier in Germany, a house caught fire on Wednesday evening. Two young twins kept their cool and likely ended up saving lives.

At around 7.18 pm, firefighters from numerous towns, including Otzenhausen, Nonnweiler, Bierfeld, Kastel, Braunshausen, and Sitzerath, were despatched to extinguish a fire in a building in Nonnweiler. Several people were reportedly inside the building while it was burning. Police, paramedics, and an emergency doctor also attended the scene.

According to the Otzenhausen fire brigade, the first teams to arrive were quickly able to bring the flames under control. The focus then shifted to treating the affected residents. One couple sustained minor injuries, while their son suffered more severe injuries.

However, a worse outcome had already been prevented from the very start – before any firefighters or emergency personnel arrived on the scene. Seven-year-old Noah Blaes, who lives next door and saw flames and smoke emerging from one of his neighbour's rooms, ran together with his twin sister Leonie to their father, Florian Blaes, to alert him to the fire.

The father immediately called emergency services, while the family worked together to warn the residents of the neighbouring building.

For example, they called out to the neighbour living underneath the room that was on fire, who had not yet noticed that anything was wrong. By that time, dark smoke and small flames were already emerging from the tilted window above.

The twins wanted to be more helpful. Among other things, they fetched their father's car keys so that he could move his vehicle for the firefighters.

Afterwards, they helped set out chairs for the neighbours and made sure they had enough water. Their father later described the moment as "extraordinary" and said he was proud of his children.

Ultimately, the affected family was able to be evacuated from the building in time. For the elderly couple's son in particular, help could not have arrived any later, as he was severely injured and had to be placed in intensive care overnight.

The parents have been temporarily housed elsewhere. Had Leonie and Noah not noticed the fire so quickly, the situation could likely have ended much worse.

After the intervention, both the firefighters and the police explicitly expressed their gratitude for the children's quick and exemplary reaction. Noah later said that he had been very afraid something might happen to the neighbours and that he was simply happy everyone was in good health.

In any case, Leonie and Noah proved to be real heroes that evening and in all likelihood saved lives.
