Luxembourg

EMERGENCY LANDING - The situation at Findel airport should have returned to normal today, after a runway was closed last night, following an emergency landing of a Cargolux plane. The Boeing 747, which departed for Chicago at around 6pm on Sunday, was unable to retract its landing gear on take-off from Luxembourg. As a result, it was forced to return immediately. On landing, its right body landing gear, including the wheels detached from the aircraft. There were no injuries. However, there were a number of cancellations, delays and diversions of flights.

MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS - It’s the start of the official election campaign today. Posters have already gone up over the weekend. There are around 3,800 candidates in the country’s 102 municipalities. The local elections take place on June 11.

EXAM TIME - The final exams in Luxembourg’s secondary schools begin today. Almost 3,800 candidates are registered: 2,150 young women and 1,640 young men. Last year, the success rate was 83%.

World

TURKEY ELECTIONS - Turkey’s General Election looks to be heading to a run-off in two weeks’ time. With almost all the ballots counted, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he will accept another vote. Nearly complete results show Erdogan picking up 49 percent of the ballot and his main opponent Kamal Kilicaroglu leader collecting around 45 percent.

UKRAINE FRANCE - Ukraine’s President Zelensky and his French counterpart President Macron have called for fresh sanctions against Russia. France has also promised to send more tanks and armoured vehicles to Ukraine. Zelensky is visiting European allies, looking for more support for the war.

THAILAND ELECTIONS - Preliminary election results in Thailand indicate voters have rejected the military-backed government, that has ruled the country for almost 10 years. Two opposition parties have surged ahead with the Move Forward Party, the newest force in Thai politics that channelled the energy of youth-led pro-democracy protests in 2020, secured the most votes.

CYCLONE MOCHA - Hundreds of thousands of people are spending another night in temporary accommodation as a powerful storm moves across the Bay of Bengal. Cyclone Mocha has caused widespread flooding and destroyed building in Myanmar, where five deaths have been reported. In Bangladesh, 400-500 makeshift shelters in Cox’s Bazaar, the world’s largest refugee camp have been destroyed.

Sport

CYCLING - Giro d’Italia leader Remco Evenepoel was forced to pull out of the race late on Sunday after contracting Covid-19, gifting Geraint Thomas the pink jersey as the new overall leader. As Evenepoel heads home, the peloton gets its first rest day today, before heading into two mountain and three hilly stages in week two.

FOOTBALL - Barcelona won La Liga for the first time since 2019 by thrashing Espanyol 4-2 on Sunday, wrestling the title back from rivals Real Madrid.The Catalan giants clinched their 27th Spanish championship, with scenes turning ugly at full time as celebrating Barcelona players were chased from the field by pitch invaders.

In other football news, Leipzig beat Bremen 2-1 in the Bundesliga. Stuttgart and Leverkusen drew 1-1. And in England, the title fight may also be decided. Manchester City won 3-0 against Everton, while Arsenal lost at home in a 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday. City is now 4 points ahead of Arsenal, and also has a game in hand.

We’ll have a bit of everything today to start off the week .It’ll be a decent enough start before the clouds start to come in, with rain expected towards the afternoon and evening.Morning temperatures of 9-11°C will reach highs of 17-19°C in the afternoon.
