The report following the abolition of data roaming charges has globally been positive, in terms of mobile phone operator profits and data usage.
Mobile phones are now used four times more to browse the internet than before, the EU Commission concluded in recent reports. Luxembourg has also experienced an increase in the transmission rate of data, which grew by a fifth following the removal of roaming charges between 2017 and 2018. The amount of data used rose from 21,029 terabytes to 25,318.
Smartphones are also being used more often to call from abroad, with 1.3 million minutes worth of call time. Xavier Bettel, the Minister for Communications and Media, delivered the figures in response to a parliamentary question submitted by LSAP MP Mars di Bartolomeo.
Contrary to expectations, the revenue of mobile phone operators also increased by 2.3% between 2017 and 2018, according to the Luxembourg Regulatory Institute (ILR).
