In Germany alone, roughly 7,500 Brits successfully applied for German citizenship in 2017. In 2016, the year that the referendum took place, there were 2,800 applications for German citizenship. Both these numbers are significantly higher than before the referendum, with only 600 cases having occurred in 2015.
Ireland has also been the subject of an increasing number of applications for Irish citizenship from British nationals. According to DPA, roughly 183,000 British nationals have applied in the last year. It is likely that while Brexit contributed to these applications, not all of them are a consequence of the referendum’s results.A large number of applicants have Irish ancestry and applied for dual citizenship.
Whilst other European countries have also received an increasing number of applications, Austria being one example, the numbers are typically much less significant.
