Whilst there are many ideas on how to help with the traffic problem, what remains to be seen is whether they can be put in practice. From the French side, for instance, the A31 is heavily overcrowded due to a large increase in traffic in the area in recent years. Hence why Cuny, mayor since 2016 and currently in full swing of his 2020 re-election campaign, has made a strong statement, confirming he would like to introduce an express commuter train between Nancy and Luxembourg.

Cuny confirmed on his Facebook page that amidst the current traffic-related issues, he wants change and is prepared to get involved in making this happen.

During an interview with our colleagues at 5minutes, Cuny explained that to him, the train station in Thionville is not all all that different from a busy Parisian station. It is a commuter station that requires an RER train, ideally leaving the station every few minutes. This would allow for the public transport system to manage the commuter flow more efficiently.

In addition, a third lane on the A31 has been planned for a while, but will most likely not be added before 2032. Cuny emphasises the fact change has to happen fast, and to further help with the flow of commuters, working from home should also be considered more seriously.
