REFUGEE CENTRE CLOSURE - The accommodation centre for refugees and asylum seekers Don Bosco in Limpertsberg will definitely close at the end of this year. Foreign and Immigration Minister Jean Asselborn confirmed the closure, in response to a parliamentary question. The centre has often been criticised in the past for poor conditions. 80 people are affected by the closure.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE - Cases of domestic violence continue to increase in Luxembourg. In 2022, the police had to intervene 983 times, which is an increase of over 7%. The figures were presented yesterday by the Minister for Equality.

World

GREECE BOAT DISASTER - Nine people suspected of being smugglers have been arrested in Greece, following the deadly sinking of a boat off the Greek coast. Among them is the captain of the boat that capsized. The Greek Supreme Court has also ordered an investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy that has shocked Greece, accused for years of turning back migrants seeking asylum in the EU. At least 78 people have been confirmed dead in the disaster and many more could still be missing at sea, with reports suggesting that up to 750 people were aboard.

CANADA ACCIDENT - At least 15 people have been killed in Canada after a truck hit a small bus that was carrying a group of mainly elderly people. Another 10 people were injured and have been taken to hospital. The crash is one of the most lethal road accidents in recent Canadian history.

GERMANY ATTACK - One of two female tourists attacked by an American man near the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany has died. According to the police, the man “physically attacked” the 21-year-old woman. When her friend tried to intervene, he allegedly choked her and pushed her down a steep slope. The suspect has been arrested.

CLIMATE CHANGE - Average global temperatures at the start of June were the warmest the EU’s climate monitoring unit has ever recorded for the period, beating previous records by a “substantial margin”. The news comes as the El Nino climate phenomenon has officially arrived, raising fears of extreme weather and more temperature records. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said yesterday the world is racing toward a climate change disaster, dismissing the current global response as woefully inadequate.

FOOTBALL - The final of the UEFA Football Nations League on Sunday will see Croatia take on Spain after the latter’s 2-1 win against Italy last night.

Luxembourg’s national football team coach Luc Holtz has announced his squad for the upcoming European qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Red Lions lose left-back Mica Pinto to injury, while Danel Sinani returns following his ban against Malta. Out of the 24-man squad, only Ralph Schon and Dejvid Sinani play for clubs based in Luxembourg. Luxembourg is playing Lichtenstein at 3pm on Saturday at the Stade de Luxembourg, followed by Bosnia away on 20 June. Both games will be streamed live on RTL Today.

Today, several European Championship qualifying matches are taking place. Among them, France play Gibraltar, England take on Malta and Denmark face Northern Ireland.

FORMULA 1 - It’s the Canada Grand Prix this weekend. Defending world champion Max Verstappen will be seeking to continue his dominant run and stretch his title-race lead after victories in Miami, Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS - The Special Olympics World Games, the world’s largest inclusive sporting event kicks off in Berlin tomorrow. Thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities compete in 26 sports for nine days. It is the first time the event is taking place in Germany.
