WARNING ALERTS - the government will continue testing its public warning system with new alert messages today. The text message will be sent to people in Colmar-Berg, Diekirch, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, Ettelbruck, and Schieren.

HOUSING EMISSIONS - In its latest interactive publication entitled Housing in Europe, Eurostat compared the environmental impact of housing per inhabitant across the EU. And it’s bad news for Luxembourg, which lies at the bottom of the pack. According to figures for 2021, each inhabitant of the Grand Duchy emits an average of 1,635 kg of greenhouse gases on heating and cooling their home.The European average was 732 kg per inhabitant in the EU in the same year.

TURKEY/SYRIA EARTHQUAKE - A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake has hit Turkey and Syria today, killing hundreds of people, levelling buildings while people were still asleep and sending tremors that were felt as far away as the island of Cyprus. Turkey’s officials have now said that 284 people have been killed and 440 injured so far, in the massive earthquake. Syrian state media said that at least 42 people have also died. The search for survivors continues.

People who began work between the ages of 20 and 21 will be able to retire at 63 rather than 64. Another national strike is planned in France tomorrow.

HACKING ATTACK - Thousands of computer servers have been targeted by a global ransomware hacking attack, according to Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency. France, Finland and Italy are the most affected countries in Europe at the moment, while the U.S. and Canada also have a high number of targets.

CHILE FIRES - Forest fires have killed 24 people, injured nearly 1,000 and destroyed 800 homes in five days as a blistering heat wave grips south-central Chile. Fueled by strong winds and temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, hundreds of fires have razed some 270,000 hectares in a region about 500 kilometers south of the capital Santiago. Over 5000 fire engines are in use and international aid is on its way.

GRAMMY AWARDS - Beyoncé has broken the record for the most Grammy Award wins of all time, after collecting her 32nd prize at this year’s ceremony. The singer made history as she won best dance/electronic album, for her album “Renaissance.” Harry Styles won album of the year with “Harry’s House” and song of the year was “just like that” by Bonnie Raitt.

CYCLO CROSS - Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel is the cyclo-cross world champion. Van der Poel ended his arch rival Wout Van Aert’s chances of victory in a closing sprint to cap a magnificent three days for Dutch cyclists in front of almost 50,000 home fans at Hoogerheide. The Luxembourger Marie Schreiber came in 5th place in the U23.

FOOTBALL RESULTS - In the German Bundesliga, Bayern won 4-2 against Wolfsburg.Bremen beat Stuttgart 2-0. In the French Ligue 1, Nice won 3-1 against Marseille. In Italy, Inter Milan beat AC Milan 1-0 . And in England, Tottenham also won 1-0 against Manchester City. Tottenham striker Harry Kane has become the club’s record scorer, as he made his 267th goal for the club.

RUGBY - France got their Six Nations title defence off to a winning start after squeezing past Italy 29-24 in Rome on Sunday.

It’s Monday morning, and Luxembourg’s weather is making an effort to get us all going. There might be a few clouds as the day wears on, but we should have plenty of sun rays in the morning and early afternoon. Morning temperatures could drop below 0°C in the morning, but will rise to highs of 6°C in the afternoon.
