The police trade union has weighed in on the debate, calling for speed limits of 130 km/h to generally be introduced.
The debate was sparked by the leak of a working paper which proposed a 130 km/h speed limit for all motorways in order to cut transport carbon emissions.
The trade union’s vice president spoke with the Süddeutschen Zeitung on the matter. He explained that the trade union’s stance emerged from security reasons rather than environmental ones.
Such a speed limit would reduce the number of critical accidents, which in turn would save lives and avoid severe injuries.
Some people choose to drive up to 200 or even 250 km/h in Germany, which is legally permitted.
The vice president claimed driving at those speeds was insane, as nobody would be able to keep control of their car in stressful/dangerous situations.
