On Thursday night, police officers in Trier were attacked by around 40 people in front of a nightclub. Local police say the culprits identified so far are German nationals, not immigrants as speculated on social media.

The incident left five officers injured.

Thanks to witness testimonies and videos that were shared with the Trier police, the authorities were able to locate several of the individuals who had attacked the officers.

The police hope that the footage and testimonies from more witnesses will help them identify more potential attackers.

In their latest statement, the Rhineland-Palatinate police specify that all of the individuals that have been apprehended so far are German nationals.

The police have decided to share this information to counter “rumours and speculation on social media” that the attackers are immigrants.

The authorities call on the public to cease spreading rumours of this nature and refrain from speculating.
