Police were called to a the nightclub after a person was attacked and injured. A patrol came to the scene, but had to request help because of the aggressive mood. While they were waiting for their colleagues, a crowd of 40 people gathered, some of whom tried to attack the officials. They were eventually able to repel the attackers with the help of pepper spray.
When the other police officers came to the scene, they too became targets and were attacked with iron rods, brooms, shovels and glass bottles. The situation became ‘life-threatening’ for the officers, according to the Rhineland Palatinate police bulletin.
One policeman then drew his gun and fired twice into the air. The situation subsequently calmed down, allowing the officers to continue their work and also take care of their five injured colleagues. A 42-year-old man and a 21-year-old were arrested, but the other attackers ran away.
The police are now investigating the incident, seeking to charge those involved for bodily harm and resisting the officers. Witnesses are also being sought, who can contact the Trier police on 0049 651 9779 5210.
The Trier police director said that he had never experienced anything like this in his time in the profession. “A group of violent criminals got together to attack the police, just because they were there, and to injure the officers.”
