A police officer was fatally shot and another critically injured during a house search near Charleroi as the person of interest barricaded themselves and opened fire on law enforcement. The assailant was critically wounded and later died.

According to reports from media and the local prosecutor’s office, a 36-year-old police officer was shot dead during a house search in Lodelinsart, near Charleroi, Belgium, on Monday. A second officer was severely injured and is still in critical condition while a third person sustained minor injuries.

A search at the perpetrator was carried out around 6.30am at the request of an investigating judge with the support of special units of the federal police.

The person of interest at the centre of the search is said to have barricaded themselves in the building and started shooting at police. The attacker shot “three POSA (Protection, Observation, Support and Arrest Platoons) police officers from Liège”, reports Le Soir.

The perpetrator was reportedly injured during the shoot-out but died from their injuries.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has since expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased officer. The reasons for the search at not yet known.
