ELECTION CANDIDATES - The Ministry of Home Affairs has said that only 38% of candidates in the municipal elections are women. Approximately 1,500 women and 2,300 men are going to stand as candidates. 90% of candidates are Luxembourg nationals.

WW2 BOMB - A bomb from the Second World War was found on a construction site in Hosingen, in northern Luxembourg yesterday. As soon as it was discovered, work was suspended to allow the mine clearance service to intervene. On arrival at the site, the agents of the service organised the controlled explosion of the bomb. No injuries were reported by the emergency services.

CARGOLUX PROFITS - 2022 was another record year for Cargolux. The Luxembourg-based cargo airline earned $1.6 billion in profit in 2022, a 22% increase over the previous year. On the operational level, however, the year was challenging due to the war in Ukraine and the Covid-19 restrictions in China. Cargolux anticipates lower profits in 2023.

PETROL PRICE - Petrol prices for SP 98 premium unleaded petrol has gone up by 2.1 cents last night. It now costs €1.785 per litre. Diesel and regular 95 petrol prices remain the same.

RTL REBRAND - Luxembourg’s RTL has unveiled a new logo and new design on all its platforms. The multi-coloured RTL logo serves as the key visual for RTL Luxembourg, where it is presented in three shades of red. The revitalised design extends to all RTL media in Luxembourg, including updated television studios, graphics, and on-air-designs, in alignment with the new brand identity.

World

CHINA UKRAINE - Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky by phone on Wednesday, the first known call between the two leaders since the start of Russia’s invasion. The nearly one-hour discussion, which reportedly included Xi advocating for peace negotiations, was met by Russian accusations that Ukraine was undermining efforts to end the fighting. Beijing says it is neutral in the Ukraine conflict and Xi has never condemned the Russian invasion, but the Chinese leader has come under increased pressure from Western nations to step in and mediate.

BETTEL NATO - More political meetings today. Prime Minister Xavier Bettel is on an official visit today in Brussels to meet NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. And Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn is in Salzburg for a meeting of five German-speaking foreign ministers to discuss current affairs.

US KOREA - The US and South Korea have secured a landmark deal to counter the North Korean nuclear threat. Washington has agreed to deploy US nuclear-armed submarines to South Korea and involve Seoul in its nuclear planning operations. In return, South Korea has agreed to not develop its own nuclear weapons.

Sports

CYCLING - yesterday was the first real stage of the Tour de Romandie. British rider Ethan Vernon got through and is the new leader. Luxembougish cyclist Bob Jungels came in 70th place in the same period and is now the best Luxembourger.

FOOTBALL - And in English football, Manchester City has clearly registered ambitions for the Champions League title .In the top match against Arsenal last night there was a clear 4-1 victory.

In Italy, Inter Milan is in the cup final, after 1-0 yesterday in the second leg of the semi-final against Juvenuts and in the Spanish championship, Rayo Vallecano stunned La Liga leaders Barcelona with a 2-1 win.

After another fresh start this morning we may catch a slight glimpse of the sun behind those clouds! The day will largely be cloudy, with temperatures starting to climb somewhat before we head into the weekend.The morning’s temperatures will start off at 2-4°C, jumping up to around 12-14°C in the afternoon.
