ING ACCOUNTS - Following weeks of speculation, ING bank has now officially confirmed in writing it is ending retail banking services for all private customers. The statement further reads that the bank acknowledges it had “underestimated the impact of the communication”. In the last weeks, numerous private clients reported via social media and forums that their accounts had been unilaterally closed, with ING asking them to switch their accounts to another bank in Luxembourg. ING Luxembourg will now only focus on Wholesale Banking, which is meant for larger clients, such as corporations, government agencies, real estate developers or financial institutions. Reports indicate widespread outrage over the bank’s handling of the situation.

CANCER TREATMENT - Immune therapy is becoming increasingly crucial in the battle against cancer. One innovative approach involves using a patient’s immune system to specifically target the illness.Since January, the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) has been offering CAR T-cell treatments for certain types of blood and lymph gland cancers. CAR T-cells are genetically modified white blood cells designed to combat cancer more effectively.

SNAIL INFESTATION -The surge in snail populations this spring has posed significant challenges for both hobby gardeners and professionals, leading to heavy losses among vegetable growers. The notable increase in snails is attributed to the combination of a mild winter and a wet spring, creating optimal breeding conditions for these creatures. According to Pit Reichert, a gardener and co-founder of the Terra cooperative, around a quarter of vegetables have been affected by the snail infestation.

World

AIRPORT ACCIDENT - A person has died after falling into the spinning turbine blades of a departing passenger jet at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. The death occurred on the apron outside the busy hub’s terminal as a KLM flight was ready to depart for Billund in Denmark. Dutch border police, who are responsible for security at the Netherlands’ largest airport, said passengers were removed from the plane and an investigation has been opened.
UK ELECTION - The British parliament was dissolved early this morning, as the five-week campaign period begins leading up to a general election on July 4. The election is expected to bring the Labour party back to power after 14 years of Conservative rule.

TICKETMASTER HACKING - The Australian government is investigating claims by a hacking group to have stolen the details of 560 million customers from global events giant Ticketmaster. The group, named ShinyHunters, said on an online forum that the stolen data included the names, addresses, phone numbers and credit card details of customers and have demanded half a million dollars for the data. The FBI and Australian authorities are investigating.

NATO MEETING - The foreign ministers of the 32 NATO countries are meeting in Prague today, to discuss aid for Ukraine in the war against Russia. NATO allies are demanding that outgoing chief Jens Stoltenberg offer greater clarity on his plan to pledge a massive 100 billion euros in support of Ukraine. The proposal, to “Trump-proof” financial support for Kyiv remains a thorny issue among several alliance members.

FOOTBALL - Olympiakos fans have become the first Greek football club ever to win a European title, by defeating Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final. Olympiakos fans in the city of Piraeus celebrated as their team secured a 1-0 victory in extra time, after the match had appeared to be heading into a penalty shoot-out.

TENNIS - Naomi Osaka said she wept after Wednesday’s epic French Open defeat to Iga Swiatek but insisted: “I’ve felt worse” .Osaka led 5-2 in the final set of a pulsating second round clash and even had a match point. But defending champion Swiatek rallied to record a 7-6 (7/1), 1-6, 7-5 win which kept her on course for a fourth title in Paris and fifth Grand Slam crown.

In the men’s games, Alcaraz shook off a third-set blip against world number 176 Jesper de Jong before the Spaniard came through 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 and second seed Jannik Sinner swept aside home favourite Richard Gasquet in 3 sets last night. Former French Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas and sixth seed Andrey Rublev are also through to the next round.

BASEBALL - Major League Baseball says it is “righting a historic wrong” after recognising the achievements of black players from when it was racially segregated. Black players created their own leagues after being kept out of the MLB until 1948. Now the league has updated its records to feature those player’ statistics, meaning that all-time greats such as Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb have been replaced at the top in some categories.

Beware of potential storms in the evening. Minimum temperatures will hover around 9°C in the North of the country, and 11°C in the South. Maximum temperatures will reach 16-17°C in both the North and South.
