The incident occurred on Thursday at around 4 pm between Saunes and Hussigny-Godbrange, a route which is just across the border from Luxembourg in France.
According to Le Républicain Lorrain, the 35-year-old man was hit by a van coming from the opposite direction on the D36, the wooded route linking both towns. By the time the emergency services arrived, the man was dead.
The van driver, aged 50, was in a state of shock and taken to hospital in Mont-Saint-Martin. The road was closed to traffic for several hours in both directions.
The preliminary investigation has absolved the van driver of being at fault. Instead, the police are investigating recklessness or a desperate act on the pedestrian’s part.
