50 cents for a slice of lemon in a glass of fizzy water - suffice to say, this particular customer is unlikely to return. Nora Hamadi, a journalist with Arte, denounced the practice by posting a photo of her bill on Twitter, which incited outrage on social media.

Her bill, for five Perriers and consequently, five lemon slices, came to €30. In her Tweet, she called it “daylight robbery”.

Although shocking, the practice of charging for lemon slices is not actually illegal. Me Guyomar, a commercial lawyer, explained to French newpaper Le Parisien that it was not against the law for merchants to charge for supplements, but they were obliged to inform consumers of the practice.
