One person has died and four others injured in an explosion beneath a pedestrian bridge in Völklingen, Germany, with the cause of the detonation unclear.

A powerful detonation occurred in Völklingen in Saarland on Friday night. Police subsequently found one deceased person and four seriously injured individuals beneath a pedestrian bridge.

One of the victims died at the scene from his severe injuries, while two further individuals remain in a critical condition, according to a police spokesperson.

Residents had reported to officers shortly after midnight that they had heard a loud explosion followed by a person calling for help. The exact cause of the detonation remains unclear.

The scene of the accident at the underpass has been cordoned off covering a wide area. According to the police, there is no danger to people in the surrounding area.
