The fatal crash occurred on the A31 motorway near Terville, by Thionville, at around 2.30pm on Thursday.
A lorry was driving northbound when the driver lost control and headed through the guardrails into incoming traffic. According to French media outlets, the lorry collided with a few vehicles.
One person died in the collision whilst another is severely injured. The rescue helicopter had to land at the scene to attend to the critically injured individual, which caused the motorway to close in both directions. There were tailbacks of several kilometres as a consequence.
