
ADOLESCENTS OBESITY - The number of overweight adolescents in Luxembourg has more than doubled. While just over 5% of secondary school students in Luxembourg were overweight in the 2018/19 school year, this figure has risen to 12% last year. Studies in the US and the UK found that obesity rates among children increased during the pandemic. Minister of Health, Paulette Lenert assumes that this is also the case in Luxembourg. However, Lenert stressed that the Ministry does not yet have the necessary data to prove this trend.
ELECTION REGISTRATIONS - So far, only around 6.7% of eligible Luxembourg City residents have registered to vote in the municipal elections. The requirements for voting in local elections as a non-Luxembourgish national were recently changed. At the moment, about 5,500 non-Luxembourgers are registered to vote in the municipal elections on 11 June. More than 75,000 residents of the capital could still do so by 17 April. There is still room for improvement, Mayor Lydie Polfer acknowledged.
ADERN RESIGNATION - New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern has unexpectedly announced she will resign from office in a matter of weeks. Her labour party will elect new leader on Sunday. Miss Adern told reporters she could not find the energy or heart to continue until a general election in October.
FRANCE STRIKES - France is facing a day of strikes and protests against President Macron’s plans to reform the pension system. The government wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 but two thirds of the population are against the proposed change. In addition to stoppages in public transport and schools, big turnouts are expected at demonstrations in Paris and other cities with police warning of likely vandalism and violence from ultra-left wing agitators.

UKRAINE MILITARY AID - Ukrainian President Zelensky has rebuked the international community at the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying that it hesitates too long before helping. Russia will use the time to kill more people, he said. According to the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, details on heavy weapons will be decided at a meeting of the so-called Ukraine contact group, meeting in Ramstein tomorrow. German media is also reporting that Germany is now ready to deliver Leopard tanks to Ukraine. Under the condition, however, that the US also sends tanks of the “Abrams” type. The search has been continuing using helicopters and drones.
FOOTBALL - Inter Milan won the Italian Super Cup yesterday. That’s a 3-0 success against AC Milan. In the English Premier League, Manchester United drew 1-1 at Crystal Palace. Tonight, Manchester City meets Tottenham.
FOOTBALL MONEY LEAGUE - Manchester City topped Deloitte’s Football Money League for a second consecutive year as the English Premier League accounted for more than half of the top 20 clubs for the first time. Total revenue from the top 20 revenue generating clubs rose to near pre-pandemic levels of 9.2 billion euros for the 2021/22 season. Real Madrid came in 2nd place, while Paris St.German is the 5th biggest earner and Bayern Munich in 6th place.
