
NORTH KOREA MISSILES - North Korea has fired more than 10 missiles, including one that landed close to South Korea’s waters that its President said was “effectively a territorial invasion”. One short range ballistic missile crossed the Northern Limit Line, the de facto maritime border between the two countries, prompting a rare warning for residents on the island of Ulleungdo to seek shelter in bunkers. Update: South Korea has retaliated by firing three air’to’ground missiles in response, which officials say landed past the Northern Limit Line.
ISRAEL ELECTION - Israel’s former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told supporters in Jerusalem he is on the brink of a big victory after exit polls put his right wing block narrowly ahead in yesterday’s general election. The current prime minister Yair Lapid says he is waiting for the votes to be counted. The predictions are that Netanyahu could be poised to form a coalition with an ultra-Orthodox Jewish allies and a rising extreme-right.
DENMARK ELECTION - Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is clinging on to her job after narrowly keeping her majority in yesterday’s general election. After a nail-biting count, Frederiksen and her supporting parties are expected to win the 90 seats needed for a majority in the 179-seat parliament.
UKRAINE GRAIN - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has demanded long-term protection for wheat exports from his country via the Black Sea. Zelensky, in his daily video message said the entire corridor should be protected and that Russia should understand that there will be harsh reactions if Ukraine’s food exports are disrupted. Russia announced it was suspending the agreement to let ships through the Black sea on Saturday, accusing Ukraine of misusing the safe shipping corridor for an attack on Russian ships in Crimea. Kyiv has dismissed this as a “false pretext” to withdraw.The Turkey and UN-brokered deal signed in July by Kyiv and Moscow is crucial to easing a global food crisis caused by the war.
FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - Tottenham and Frankfurt have joined the final 16 of the UEFA Champions League after last night’s matches in which Tottenham won 2:1 against Marseilles and Frankfurt beat Lisbon 2:1. Among the results Porto beat Atletico 2:1 and Bayern Munich won 2:0 against Inter Milan. Tonight are the last matches in groups E to H, including the match AC Milan vs RB Salzburg.
TENNIS SWIATEK / DJOKOVIC - World number one Iga Swiatek opened her season-ending WTA Finals campaign on Tuesday with a straight sets victory over Russia’s eighth-ranked Daria Kasatkina. Polish star Swiatek, who has enjoyed a stellar year that included Grand Slam singles titles at the French and US Opens, eased to a 6-2, 6-3 victory in 1hr 22min at Fort Worth’s Dickies Arena in Texas.
Meanwhile Novak Djokovic began the defence of his Paris Masters title with a clinical 7-6, 6-4 second round win against American Maxime Cressy on Tuesday. The number six seed is targeting his fifth title from just 11 events after a season heavily curtailed by his opposition to being vaccinated against Covid.
The morning will bring some local showers, but the afternoon promises some sunny intervals, with the rain drying up. Morning temperatures will start off at 7-10°C, rising to 11-14°C in the afternoon.
