A disaster was narrowly avoided not far from St. Mark’s Square in Venice on Sunday. Due to bad weather conditions, the cruise ship Costa Deliziosa got dangerously close to the Giardini della Biennale, an area of parkland just along the waterfront that hosts a major part of the city’s cultural Biennale.
The ship, measuring 300m in length and holding over 2800 people only just missed hitting a yacht and a number of other boats.
A number of videos showing the incident are currently circulating the web. The city’s Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation.
This is not the first time a cruise ship has caused havoc in Venice. This past January, another ship lost control during anchoring and collided with a docked tourist boat. Four people were injured at the time.
This latest occurrence only provides more incentive to the growing number of people demanding that cruise ships be banned in Venice.
