The Jura gendarmerie confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that the fighter jet had disappeared towards the end of the morning.

According to the regional newspaper L’Est Républicain, the jet crashed on the Combe Noire mountain, near the town of Mignonvillard, which lies at an altitude of 1,050 metres.

Authorities launched a search and rescue operation, which was complicated by the snow and the topography of the area.

The two pilots of the jet have yet to be found.

The Doubs prefecture confirmed that the jet had been unarmed and did not have a reserve tank.

According to L’Est Républicain, a witness heard an explosion towards the end of the morning.

In the same area, debris and a parachute were found.

Both police officers and the army searched the area in a widespread operation, but the pilots are still unaccounted for.

More information to come.
