
MINIMUM WAGE - The minimum wage in Luxembourg has continuously increased over the past ten years and MPs are expected to soon vote on the latest boost. If passed, the new increase is set to come into effect on 1 January 2023, ensuring that Luxembourg’s minimum wage remains the highest in Europe: that means just over €2,387 for a non-qualified minimum social wage and just under €2,865 a month for qualified workers.
LIQUID REOPENING - Good news for Luxembourg’s jazz and blues fans. The Liquid bar in Grund is expected to reopen after three years, after the former owner of the bar disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 2019. As final renovations are still underway, the opening date is expected to be sometime in March 2023. The new owners have promised that the bar will “remain as it was, with live music and beer”.
US TRUMP - A US House of Representatives committee, investigating the attack on Capitol Hill almost two years ago, has recommended the Justice department bring criminal charges against Donald Trump. The former president said the move was aimed at stopping him from running for the White House again.
WEINSTEIN VERDICT- A jury in Los Angeles has found that film producer Harvey Weinstein guilty of sex crimes in a second sexual assault trial. The 70-year-old is already serving 23 years in jail after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in New York.
EU PRICE CAP - EU energy ministers have agreed a price cap for natural gas, drawing an immediate warning from Russia that the move was “unacceptable”. The price ceiling was fixed at 180 euros per megawatt hour. Luxembourg’s Minister for Energy Claude Turmes said that the agreement would avoid speculation on extremely high gas prices. The measure comes into effect in February and will run for a year.
UKRAINE WAR - Today is the 300th day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Intense fighting continues in eastern Ukraine. And in the capital city of Kyiv, there is an effort to ensure the electricity supply in the face of continued Russian drone attacks.
HALL DEATH - The musician Terry Hall, who fronted the ska band, the Specials has died. He was 63. The singer found fame in the 1970s and 80s with hits like Ghost Town, Gangsters and Too much, too young. He left the Specials in 1981 to form Fun Boy Three, who teamed up with the era’s biggest girl groups.
FOOTBALL BENZEMA - Ballon D’Or winner Karim Benzema has announced he is ending his international career, after France lost the World Cup final to Argentina. Benzema, the 35-year-old Real Madrid scorer had to withdraw from France’s World Cup squad before their first match in Qatar due to a left thigh injury he suffered in training.
WORLD CUP FRANCE - Meanwhile, supporters packed a square in central Paris ,to give a rousing welcome to the French football team despite their loss to Argentina in a nail-biting World Cup final. Fans filled the Place de la Concorde to welcome the team who were driven straight to the square from the airport after touching down from Qatar.
FOOTBALL LYON - The French Ligue 1 club Lyon has been bought by American investment company Eagle Football Holding. The company already has stakes in Crystal Palace of the English Premier League, Botafogo in Brazil and RWD Molenbeek in Belgium. The new deal is estimated to be worth more than 800 million euros.
It looks like we are in for some winter rain. The clouds are back and they will be bringing the rain along with them!
