
TRAIN ACCIDENT -On Sunday evening, at around 8.30pm, a person got struck by a train in Rue de la Montagne, Walferdange. According to CGDIS, the person suffered some injuries, with more information to follow. An ambulance and first responder were on site, as were fire fighters from Walferdange, Steinsel, Lorentzweiler and the city.
STUDENT FOIRE - It is the start of the student fair today. Over 170 exhibitors from 17 countries are participating in this edition. The first 3 days are online. EU COP 27 - EU environment ministers are meeting today in Kirchberg. They are preparing a common European position for the world climate summit , COP 27, which will take place in Egypt in two weeks. Luxembourg is represented by the Environment Minister Welringer.
FRANCE TORNADO - A mini-tornado left one person injured and damaged dozens of homes as it swept across part of northern France on Sunday. Footage shared on social media shows a huge black cloud swirling up in the form of a tornado above the skies in Bihucourt, near Calais.
UK POLITICS - Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pulled out of the contest to become Britain’s next leader, saying he had the support needed to stand but said it would not be “the right thing to do. Candidacies to replace Liz Truss can be submitted until midday. The former finance minister Rishi Sunak is the firm favourite to replace Liz Truss as Prime Minister and could do so by early this afternoon.
UKRAINE WAR - It is exactly 8 months today, since the start of the war in Ukraine. Ukraine has condemned claims by Russia that Kyiv might use a radioactive bomb to discredit Russia. President Volodymyr Zelensky said this meant Russia itself could be preparing an attack of this kind. Ukraine’s allies have also dismissed the claims, with the US saying it “rejected any pretext for Russian escalation”.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, efforts are being made to restore the energy supply. Many electricity infrastructures have been destroyed by the Russian attacks.
ETHIOPIA PEACE TALKS - Peace talks between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray rebels begin today in Addis Ababa. In addition to the end of the civil war, it is also about the access of aid organizations.
