The Christmas market in Metz opens this week, on Wednesday 20 November. Chalets, the giant Christmas tree, and a Ferris wheel (a new fixture for Christmas markets?) return to Metz on Wednesday. One of France’s biggest markets, the festive season will be accompanied by winter projections on the facade of the Saint-Etienne Cathedral, in celebration of its 800th birthday.

Both the Ferris wheel and the ice-skating rink can be found on Place de la République and Place d’Armes as usual, and will remain open until 5 January. The rest of the market will close its doors on 29 December.

The lantern trail will open on Saturday 23 November and remain open until 29 December. The trail can be found in the Fabert gardens on Place de la Préfecture. The trail will be closed over 7 and 8 December for Saint Nicholas.

The light show projected onto the cathedral will take place Thursdays through to Sundays at 7pm, 7.30 pm, 8 pm, 8.30 pm, and 9 pm. There will be limited showings on Saturday 7 December (7 pm and 7.30 pm), and no projections on Sunday 8 December.
