In Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz is considering changes to the government.

In a summer interview with ZDF, to be broadcast in full on Sunday evening, he said that Jens Spahn's resignation as leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group offers an opportunity to rethink the make-up of the government.

Merz said he would like to discuss the succession in the coming days. The CDU and CSU parliamentary groups are on summer recess, though they remain able to conduct business.
