Defending May, Bettel explained that she does not know how MPs will vote and highlighted that the House of Lords must also vote on the withdrawal agreement. On the note of the House of Lords, Bettel stressed that we tend to discuss the House of Commons, but the House of Lords must also vote and nobody knows how that vote will go.
Bettel, a clear supporter of a second referendum, did express his sympathy for May and her honesty in having no other choice but to have a no-deal Brexit, if MPs reject her agreement.
In response to the question “Do you feel confident that she can pull the UK out of this mess?”, the Luxembourgish prime minister reminded those at the press conference that Theresa May was not the one to drag the UK into the divisive discourse of leaving the United Kingdom. That was her predecessor David Cameron, who resigned following the outcome of the 2016 referendum. However, Bettel said that May must take care of the mess and is doing so to the best of her abilities, repeatedly stating that she is following the will of the people.
