Devastating wildfires are haunting Portugal almost every year. Dozens of people were killed in 2017.

Six regions in central and southern Portugal are currently on high alert. According to the interior minister, 12 civilians and eight firefighters suffered injuries in the Castelo Branco region.

Firefighters relied on helicopters and tanker planes to extinguish three massive blazes in the region and bring the situation under control.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his “solidarity with the hundreds fighting the scourge of the fires”.
