The accident occurred on Rue du Couronné in Thionville, shortly after 4pm on Thursday, according to Le Républicain Lorrain.
A man slipped down the stairs of a disused workplace, falling a distance of five metres into water. The fall caused multiple fractures, including an open fracture in his left ankle.
The Thionville fire services were called to assist the man, who was transported to the Bel-Air de Thionville hospital. The fall is said to have been potentially fatal, had the emergency services not intervened in time.
