A major power failure has left millions of people in South America without electricity. Large parts of Argentina and Uruguay lost power just after 7.00 am local time (12.00 pm Central European Time). This was reported on Twitter by the local energy supplier Edesur.

Some areas are now regaining power, and the supplier is working to resolve the issue within the next few hours.

It is believed that the fault originated in the Argentine network and then affected the interconnected network which links the Argentine and Uruguayan power supply.

Some news reports also suggested that parts of Brazil and Paraguay are also affected.
