The Audi A6 driver was caught on the A4 on Thursday, travelling in the direction of Paris at a speed of 240km/h - exceeding the 130km speed limit by far.
His car and licence were immediately confiscated following orders by the Marne prefecture, according to news outlet L’Union. The driver will be summoned by the French court. In the meantime, he has received a ban from driving in French territories.
In France, any speed infraction of more than 50km/h above the limit is punished by a fixed fine of €1,500 and a three-year licence suspension. During court proceedings, speeding can be considered a crime and could lead to a prison sentence. This is particularly the case when there is recurrence or if speeding has caused unintentional injuries. Some motorists flashed at 225 km/h on the motorways have already been sentenced to five years in prison.
In Luxembourg, any speed which exceeds 195km/h is considered a crime if it follows a serious infringement which occurred in the last three years. In such cases, motorists risk fines ranging from €500 to €10,000, and/or imprisonment from eight days to three years.
