Eurostat revealed statistics about asylum request numbers of 2018 in the European Union on Thursday, which were assessed positively.
Roughly 40% granted asylum requests were accepted in Germany, according to Eurostat, meaning that our neighbouring country granted asylum status to around 139,000 people. Germany is followed by Italy and France.
However, the rate of granted asylum applications was higher in Ireland, with 85%, followed by Luxembourg with 72%, and Portugal with 60%. 1,000 out of 1,390 requests in the Grand Duchy were granted.
As a reaction to the statistics published by Eurostat, Asselborn expressed pride via his official Facebook page, saying that in 2018, Luxembourg made many ‘illegal’ individuals ‘legal’ out of the public interest of the country and human responsibility.
Luxembourg does not need to be warned against illegal migration, said Asselborn, continuing that the Grand Duchy needs to be vigilant about a political party with an increasingly extreme-right tendency and xenophobic statements with the aim to provoke unjust fear, in accordance with the classical user manuals by foreign parties such as the AFD, Front National, or the Italian Lega.
