Customs officials came across the drugs in a van with Lithuanian registration plates last week. The resin was concealed in tin cans destined for the restaurant industry and sealed in an industrial manner.

The van had been parked at a motorway stop on the A36 near Burnhaupt-le-Bas, an area renowned for being a crossing point for smuggling illegal goods. The two men in the van, Lithuanians aged 22 and 52, explained that they had driven from their home country to Spain where they collected the van on behalf of a sponsor. They were told to drive the van to Lithuania via France and assured officials they had no idea of the drugs.

The two men were indicted on Tuesday after having been in custody for 96 hours and were then placed in provisional detention.

The Mulhouse police’s drugs brigade is now in charge of the investigation.
