
POTENTIAL FINES - Businesses in Luxembourg could be hit with a fine of up to €10,000 if they are found to repeatedly flout legislation introduced at the beginning of this year. Since the start of 2024 it is prohibited to post or distribute commercial printed flyers and pamphlets without the recipient’s express consent. The new law, which forms part of a set of five bills referred to as the ‘circular economy package’, was voted in by members of Parliament on the 27th of April last year, in line with Luxembourg’s efforts to cut down on littering as well as single-use plastic and food waste.
FUEL PRICE RISES - From midnight, prices for diesel and heating oil have risen in the Grand Duchy: Diesel has increased by 2.2 cents to €1.509 per litre. Low sulphur heating oil increased by 2.3 cents to €0.967/litre. Whilst 10ppm oil has increased by around 2.4 cents to €0.966/litre.
BODY DISCOVERED - The public prosecutor’s office has officially confirmed that the body of the woman who went missing in Junglinster was found as part of a private search operation. The body was found along a path frequented by the woman, who had been missing since 8 January, according to statements from the public prosecutor’s office.
TRUMP VICTORY - Donald Trump romped to a lightning-quick victory on Monday in Iowa’s caucuses — the first vote in the US presidential race — cementing his status as the presumptive Republican standard-bearer to challenge President Joe Biden in November’s election. The former president has led polling for more than a year, but the contest was seen as the clearest insight yet into whether he can convert his advantage into a stunning White House return. The Iowa victory demonstrated the 77-year-old’s success in turning his prosecutions into a rallying cry that has galvanized his followers as he takes his momentum into New Hampshire, the next state to nominate, next Tuesday.
CHINA AT DAVOS - China will put on a show of force on Tuesday with a large delegation represented by Prime Minister Li Qiang at the annual meeting of global elites in Davos, despite shadows cast by wars raging in Ukraine and Gaza. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also attending the World Economic Forum in person for the first time since Russia’s invasion in 2022, hoping to drum up more aid as the conflict approaches its second anniversary. Other key speakers on Tuesday include EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen and NATO head Jens Stoltenberg.
ISRAEL/GAZA CONFLICT - Israel on Monday said the “intensive” phase of its war on Hamas in devastated southern Gaza would end “soon” as the UN chief pleaded for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire”. Meanwhile, Hamas announced the death of two of the Israeli captives it abducted during its October attack that triggered the war, in a video Israel has condemned as a “brutal use of innocent hostages”.
EMMY AWARDS - The final season of “Succession” dominated the Emmy Awards on Monday, scooping six prizes including best drama, at a nostalgic gala honoring television’s past and present that was delayed by four months due to Hollywood strikes. Dysfunctional restaurant drama, “The Bear” also won six awards, including the top comedy prize, best actor, and best supporting actress and actor.
TENNIS - In her first major tournament following an 18-month hiatus to give birth, German Angelique Kerber’s Grand Slam comeback ended in the first round at the Australian Open in a hard fought match where she succumbed to the 2022 Melbourne Park finalist Danielle Collins, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. On the men’s side, 11th seed Casper Ruud beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. While Britain’s Cameron Norrie, seeded 19th, saw off Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets.
FOOTBALL - In the group stages of the African Cup of Nations, Senegal recorded a solid 3-0 victory over Gambia, Cameroon and Guinea drew 1-1, with Algeria and Angola also playing out a 1-1 draw.
Respite from Monday’s snowfall - today will be dry and sunny, albeit still freezing.
Expect some morning mists, which will dissipate as the day goes on, giving way to bright sun. However, as evening approaches, the clouds will draw in and temperatures will plummet once more, with more snow potentially on the way on Wednesday.
The morning’s temperatures will start off at around -4 to -2°C, rising to around -1 to 1°C later in the day, and getting colder once again in the evening, dropping as low as -5°C in some areas.
