
JUNGLINSTER FIRE - Rescue services have confirmed that the building housing the municipal administration of Junglinster has been impacted by a fire since early this morning. According to the numerous CGDIS teams on-site, the situation is now under control, although the fire has not been fully extinguished. No injuries have been reported.
The recent expansion of the municipality, officially completed in May, does not include the affected area. The old farmhouse and its adjacent section have been impacted and are deemed unusable. Municipal services will remain closed, with plans to resume operations next Tuesday.
FRANCE FARMERS - The protests of farmers in France are continuing today. The A31 has been completely blocked since 9.00 am on Thursday near Thionville. Farmers have been blocking the motorway in both directions for two days. Traffic jams are very likely throughout the day. In many places, the farmers’ protests are lasting longer than initially announced.
On the A4 behind Metz, for example, hundreds of rubber tyres were thrown on to the motorway yesterday evening. New French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal says that answers to various complaints from farmers should be provided by the government today.
FLU CASES UP - The Ministry of Health has announced a notable rise in flu cases, with 700 new cases registered in the past week. This represents an increase of around 60%. In contrast, the report indicates a different trend for Covid-19 during the same period. Officially registered cases stood at 150, suggesting a comparatively stable situation.
LUXEMBOURG SONG CONTEST - As anticipation builds for the Luxembourg Song Contest on Saturday, viewers are gearing up for the competition that will determine Luxembourg’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. The artist who emerges as the winner following Saturday’s show will bring an end to the Grand Duchy’s 31-year absence from Eurovision.
The voting mechanism mirrors that of the Eurovision Song Contest, with 50% of the total votes derived from a jury and the remaining 50% from the audience. Voting will occur through a direct link provided on the official RTL website on Saturday evening.
GAZA GENOCIDE RULING - The UN’s top court could issue an interim ruling ordering Israel to halt its military operations in Gaza today. The session at the International Court of Justice in the Hague is part of a case brought by South Africal, alleging that Israel is committing genocide. A decision should be announced around 1 o’clock this afternoon.
RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR - The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting at Russia’s request yesterday, following the crash of a Russian military transport plane near the Russia-Ukraine border. Both sides are calling for an investigation. 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war were onboard.
SWIMMING - This weekend a top-class swimming event is taking place at the Coque. 600 swimmers from 25 countries, including former Olympic winners, world champions and world record holders are taking part in the 24th edition of Euro Meet. 18 Luxembourgers are also registered.
FOOTBALL - It’s the start of the 19th matchday in the Bundesliga. Frankfurt will face Mainz tonight.
TENNIS - Novak Djokovic meets Jannik Sinner today for a place in the Australian Open final, knowing he stands just two matches away from tennis immortality.The Serbian superstarwill resume his march towards an 11th title and a record 25th Grand Slam crown in the afternoon session.
In the night match, the spotlight will be on Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev and Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who knocked Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz out in the quarter-finals.
