
Vowing to build a “welfare state”, Nauseda said he would bridge the gap between rich and poor in Lithuania, which is among the most pronounced in the 28-member EU, adding that he would also seek to bring urban and rural Lithuanians closer together.
Juncker has issued a congratulatory statement through Twitter, which reads:
“Dear President-elect,
Please allow me to extend my heartfelt congratulations following your solid victory in the second round of the Presidential elections of Lithuania, which were held yesterday.
I am confident that with your leadership Lithuania will continue on its path as a very successful, dynamic and trusted member of the European Union, actively and strongly contributing to our common project and to our common future.
For Europe to thrive in the face of current challenges, the EU’s Member States must act together. Only by finding strength in unity, will Europe be able to influence the course of world events.
I would like to wish you every success in your term as President and I greatly look forward to meeting you and to working closely together.”
