CHURCH THEFT - The police are seeking assistance following a recent break-in at a church in Trintange, located in eastern Luxembourg. The incident occurred between 5-6 April, resulting in the theft of two gold crowns along with an unspecified sum of cash. The police are now actively investigating the matter, aiming to identify the perpetrators.

N15 DETOUR - Commuters travelling between Ettelbruck and Heiderscheid face a cumbersome journey due to roadworks shutting down the N15 route until Saturday. Navigating through the road closure proves to be an odyssey for many, taking drivers on a rather scenic tour through northern Luxembourg.

EXPO 2025 - With just one year left until the World Expo in Osaka, the countdown officially starts this Saturday. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs preparations for the Luxembourg Pavilion, dubbed “Doki Doki” (Japanese for heartbeat) are well underway. Construction work started in February following a ground-breaking ceremony held in January, attended by Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel. As Expo 2025 approaches its official opening, organisers have initiated calls for applications for staff and volunteers for the Luxembourg Pavilion.

PETROL PRICE DOWN - Following a recent drop in diesel prices, motorists in Luxembourg can anticipate a notable reduction in the cost of SP98 petrol on Friday. The price adjustment reflects a substantial decrease of 7.5 cents per litre for SP98 petrol in Luxembourg. This reduction translates to a saving of €3.75 for a full 50-litre tank. the overall price of SP98 petrol will drop from €1.886 to €1.811 per litre, nearing the levels observed three weeks ago.

SCHUTTRANGE WATER - According to the Schuttrange municipality’s, the tap water may appear cloudy following a malfunction in one of the local water resources. As a precautionary measure, the municipality urges residents to boil tap water for a minimum of two minutes before consumption or use in food preparation. Additionally, residents are advised to refrain from washing food items, such as fruits and vegetables, with tap water until further notice.

World

ISRAEL ALERT - Israel is on alert after Iran threatened reprisals over a strike in Syria this month that killed two Iranian generals. Israel was widely blamed for an April 1 attack that destroyed Iran’s consulate building in Damascus and killed seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The United States pledged support for its top regional ally despite diplomatic tensions over Israel’s military conduct in Gaza.

BIDEN DEFENCE - Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has made “ironclad” defence pledges to Japan and the Philippines as he hosted his counterparts amid growing tensions with Beijing. Biden cemented the United States’ security commitments in the South China Sea, as repeated confrontations between Chinese and Philippine vessels have stoked fears of wider conflict.

UKRAINE WAR - Ukrainian lawmakers have approved an army mobilisation bill that has sparked anger, as Moscow pounded energy facilities in another “massive” air raid across the country yesterday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the West to provide more air defences as he visited ally Lithuania. He also signed a 10-year security cooperation agreement with Latvia, the latest in a number of similar agreements.

O.J. SIMPSON - The family of O.J. Simpson have appealed for privacy, after announcing his death aged 76. He had cancer. He is best remembered for being acquitted in 1995 of murdering his ex-wife and her friend. The court proceedings were called ‘the trial of the century’ by reporters in the US.

FOOTBALL – Last night saw the quarter final matches in the Europa League. Starting with a surprise Liverpool lost to Atalanta Bergamo 3-0. Bayer Leverkusen beat West Ham 2-0. Benfica won 2-1 against Marseille and AS Rome beat AC Milan 1-0. The return matches are next week.

In the German Bundesliga, Augsburg are playing Union Berlin tonight. But all eyes are on Sunday’s game, where Werder Bremen play Bayer Leverkusen. With 24 wins and four draws in the league this season, Leverkusen are on the cusp of going through a Bundesliga season undefeated.The unprecedented achievement has led to calls for Xabi Alonso’s side to receive a golden Bundesliga shield.

GOLF - Bryson deChambeau is leading by one from Scottie Scheffler after a storm shortened the first day at the Masters. The LIV golfer finished seven under par, holding off world number one Scottie Scheffler for a one-stroke lead. Play will resume today. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods will have the chance to make Masters history today, if his surgically repaired legs and back can stand the strain of walking 23 holes.
