Snow chaos in AustriaIschgl, Sölden, Lech and Zürs cut off from the world due to snowfall

The snow chaos in southern Bavaria and parts of Austria has continued into the new week, with the risk of avalanches in the Alps remaining high.

The high amount of snowfall is increasingly exacerbating the situation in Austria. In the area of Salzburg alone, around 17,000 people were cut off from the outside world.

The continued risk of avalanches led the road to Obertauern to be closed on Sunday evening. In Tirol and Vorarlberg, a further number of towns are inaccessible, including Ischgl, Sölden, Lech, and Zürs.

The mountain pass ‘Fern Pass’, which connects Germany and Austria, has also been closed. Many areas are still experiencing avalanches.

On Sunday evening, an avalanche buried a federal road in Berchtesgadener, but there were no injuries. A hotel in Balderschwang, Oberallgäu was hit by an avalanche, but the hotel owner has confirmed that there were no injuries or people reported missing. The most damage that occurred is that windows were broken by the avalanche.

The local avalanche commission met on Monday morning to discuss the current situation, confirming that Ischgl is still cut off from the outside world. The next update will occur on Tuesday morning.

According to the forecast, the weather should improve from Tuesday onwards. The situation in neighbouring Switzerland is also quite severe. The avalanche danger level was put at its highest in certain regions.

The Swiss region from Bern to Oberwallis is expecting a further 60 to 100 centimetres of snowfall by Monday evening.

The situation remains critical in Bavaria as well, as both the snow and rain has caused flooding.
