Residents of Irrel, six kilometres from the Luxembourg border, were awakened by the detonation of a Kreissparkasse ATM around 4 a.m.
Bitburg police were alerted by local residents. Several people were seen near the scene of the explosion. They allegedly fled in a dark Audi with yellow license plates.
A security perimeter was established by the police who searched the area.
A search operation was launched in Germany as well as in Luxembourg. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
