Police and emergency services were called to the HypoVereinsbank branch on Rennweg in western Regensburg at around 2.50pm on Thursday following reports of a robbery.
The suspect, who was reportedly armed with a knife, remained inside the bank until around 6pm. Police later arrested the 20-year-old German national and brought the hostage situation to an end.
Two other hostages were freed by officers. The bank employee who was attacked managed to make eye contact with emergency workers outside the building before being taken to hospital. He later died from his injuries.
A large police operation was mounted around the bank, involving specialist officers and a helicopter. The surrounding area was cordoned off while the operation was under way.
The motive behind the robbery and subsequent attack remains unclear.
