With 1,400 cases of the coronavirus and 21 deaths, the region has thus far been the worst hit in all of France. Hospitals and nursing staff are said to be struggling to cope, reported

Le Monde.

On Saturday evening, the emergency helpline was overwhelmed in the Moselle region, according to the report.

All non-essential operations have been postponed but hospitals are beginning to be saturated, said the president of the regional union of doctors, Guilaine Kieffer-Desgrippes. There is also said to be a shortage of protective masks for staff.

The situation is more complicated in Alsace, where the majority of cases are focused. Le Monde cited a Strasbourg emergency doctor who deplored the lack of resuscitation beds, as all designated beds are already filled.

According to the dean of the faculty of medicine of Strasbourg, Jean Sibilia, the main concern is that the pandemic has not yet peaked and the situation could deteriorate further.

Kieffer-Desgrippes, meanwhile, has appealed to the public to observe government advice and to avoid unnecessary socialising in order to protect fellow citizens.

Sibilia supported the appeal, saying too many people were in denial of what was at stake and were ignoring guidelines. He stated it was imperative for the public to act in order to reduce the spread, saying it was too late in Alsace, but not elsewhere.
