Initial reports said the lorry caught fire close to Pont-à-Mousson and the Lesménils exit on the A31 towards Metz and Nancy.
Several vehicles were caught up in the incident and the traffic is severely delayed as a result. The lorry’s cargo was scattered across the motorway, while a lorry ended up in a ditch.
The accident caused 20 minute delays over a stretch of five kilometres by 6.45am, and the road has been shut.
