Streets under water, torrents flowing into metro stations, mudslides in the middle of the city: this was the spectacle that the inhabitants of Porto witnessed on Saturday and Sunday. According to Portuguese news agency Lusa, heavy rainfalls came in short succession and flooded a large part of the city. Flooding was most severe in the centre.
Emergency services say they were called into action more than 150 times in less than two hours on Saturday. The majority of calls were related to flooding in homes or public roads. At this stage, no injuries have been reported.
The greater Porto region will remain under yellow alert until 6pm on Sunday. In the meantime, rescue workers are doing their best to evacuate the water trapped in the city centre.
