
HEATWAVE – Southern Luxembourg will remain under orange alert for extreme heat as temperatures are set to reach 35°C. The alert is in place from midday until 7pm. The Moselle valley and urban areas might even see temperatures exceeding the forecast. Meteolux has issued a yellow alert for northern Luxembourg over the same time period, where temperatures are likely to hit highs of 33°C. By the evening we may see the dry conditions replaced by rain showers and even thunderstorms, with winds of up to 50 km/h.
RAIL CONSTRUCTION WORK – The second phase of construction work on the railway line between Luxembourg City and Bettembourg kicked off yesterday, lasting until 15 September. During this phase, no trains will operate between the two stations. CFL has provided shuttle buses ready to undertake 850 daily rides in both directions. In other news, trains are running as usual once again between Bettembourg and Thionville.
FESTIVAL RAPE – A 17-year-old girl was raped at the Piccadilly Festival in Stadtbredimus this past weekend. An investigation has been launched. Police were first alerted to the incident at approximately 3am on Sunday. Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the assault.
FOOD RECALL – The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration has issued a recall notice for the Lieken Urkorn bread due to the potential presence of plastic fragments. The bread is sold in several stores across Luxembourg.
SIDEMEN VIDEO – British Youtube group Sidemen were recently in Luxembourg to film a race across the country – and the video is now out. Sidemen’s main Youtube channel, @sidemen, boasts 21.5 million subscribers – and the two-hour video featuring their race across the length of Luxembourg already reached over 2.2 million views at the time of writing.
UKRAINE WAR – President Volodymr Zelensky has said Ukraine’s offensive operations in Russia’s Kursk region are intended to bring peace closer. In his evening address he said any attack was justified to force Russia into ending its aggression. The Ukrainian military says its troops now hold 1,000 square kilometres of Russian territory.
TRUMP INTERVIEW – Donald Trump has given a rambling interview to Elon Musk on the social media network X. The start was delayed by more than 40 minutes due to technical issues. Trump said that he would return to the town of Pennsylvania where there was an attempt on his life, that he wants to build an iron dome defence system and that he would close the US Department of Education. He also claims that when he was in the White House, he prevented Russia from invading Ukraine.
IRAN ATTACK – Western leaders, including the US, Germany, France, and Italy are urging Iran to refrain from attacking Israel. Iran has vowed to respond to an airstrike on Tehran last month, in which the Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed. Israel says it thinks an attack could come this week.
GREECE FIRES – Firefighters and soldiers are continuing to battle wildfires near Athens, which have encroached on the suburbs of the Greek capital. A fire service spokesman said they were fighting many localised blazes. Greece has formally called for EU assistance. So far Italy, France, the Czech Republic, and Romania are sending units to help.
CYCLING – Dutch rider Charlotte Kool kept her head amid a chaotic bunched sprint finish to win the first stage of the women’s Tour de France yesterday. Kool took the yellow jersey as the women’s Tour got underway in the Netherlands with a 123-kilometre flat ride from Rotterdam to The Hague. Two stages will be raced on Tuesday, the first over 69.7km from Dordrecht back to Rotterdam, followed by a 6.3km individual time-trial.
FOOTBALL – The transfer carousel continues to spin this month – for another two weeks until 30 August. Atletico Madrid have signed striker Julian Alvarez from Manchester City in a deal reported to be worth up to €85 million.
Lautaro Martinez has committed his future to Inter Milan after signing a new contract which keeps him with the Serie A champions until 2029.
And German international Maximilian Beier has signed a five-year deal with Borussia Dortmund after passing a medical with the Bundesliga club on a deal reported to be worth €30 million.
The transfer window also runs until the end of the month in Luxembourg football.
Another sweltering day beckons, although this evening may bring rain showers and thunderstorms in some areas. Forecasters have issued an orange alert for southern Luxembourg and yellow alert for the north of the country. Temperatures will start off at 20–22°C in the morning, rising to highs of 33–35°C in the afternoon.
